#1 Tamagotchi - These digital pets were released in 1997 and took over our hearts and keychain accessories. They were re-released in 2017 with a faster computer but everything else is authentically 90s! As every 90s / Y2K girl should be, I’m totally obsessed. They come in all different colors and even have a pause option now so you don’t have to convince your mom to take care of it while you’re at school :P

I had a purple Tamagotchi with pink buttons back in the late 90s and wore it with the chain connected to the front belt loop on my light wash denim. The day that will forever haunt me is when I went to an apple orchard and my poor Tamagotchi vanished from my belt loop. Secure your digital pets so you can love them forever! I chose to replace it with this Tamagotchi which is giving me major mermaid 90s vibes. Even my little kitten friend was excited to see the first hatch!

#2 8 different flavors of Lip Smackers Lip Gloss - As a Y2K girl, you need your variety with you at all times and in this case it means 8 weird flavors of lip gloss that you end up eating off your lips because not only do you apply generously as often as you like, these bad boys don’t have nearly as many calories as real cotton candy does. It’s hard to choose a favorite flavor since they kept coming out with new flavors and as technology advanced they released the iconic Dr. Pepper flavor!

#3 Butterfly Hair Clips - There are a million hair clips you’ll need but these assorted color butterfly clips are EVERYTHING. Whether you are doing braids, twists, or space buns you need at least a million of these in your hair to complete the look. Just be careful not to step on these bad boys because they honestly hurt worse than Legos! I speak from experience. Check out this throwback of me in 1999 rocking so many hair clips while drawing my paper doll custom dresses!

#4 Inflatable Backpack - Blow this bad boy up and put all your Y2K essentials inside. Don’t let anyone burst your bubble or inflatable backpack! They come in all different bright colors but I always loved the clear ones.

#5 Tattoo Chokers - Chokers, in general, are so totally late 90s and Y2K but one of the most memorable chokers of this time was the iconic plastic tattoo choker. It came in every color, multi-colors, with beads and charms. Every outfit could be completed with one!

#6 Jelly Bracelets - The infamous jelly bracelet actually started in the 80s with Madonna helping their popularity but was carried into the 90s and ultimately the early 2000s. Linking the bracelets was the coolest way to wear them! They are often referred to as sex bracelets with each color representing a different meaning which lets your peer’s minds run wild. My favorite were these glow in the dark jelly bracelets but I also loved the glitter jelly bracelets from this iconic time period too.

#7 Colored Lens Sunglasses - Britney Spears and NSYNC* were known for rocking colored sunglasses in Y2K. There are no limits to colored shades and many seen in this time period were anywhere from yellow, blue, pink and green.

#8 Belly Chain - Channel your inner Aaliyah vibes with a thin metal belly chain. RIP to our angel in heaven who was taken from this world far too soon. Back in the early 2000s, I found my belly chain in a bargain bin sale at Claire’s. Remember those 10 for $10 sales they would have? You would have to dig through big white baskets full of tangled jewelry and spilled glitter makeup but it was all part of the fun. I would beg my dad to drive me, my sisters and friends, to the mall to score big at Claire’s clearance bin sales!

#9 Glitter Eyeliner & Body Glitter - Are you really living the Y2K lifestyle if you’re not covered in iridescent glitter? The answer is no. I have a few go-to products to achieve my glitter vibes, my favorite being these colorful glitter eyeliners! These are great because you can paint controlled lines. Back in the day, some of my favorite glitters were the roll-on tubes that went on cold, never dried quick enough and would eventually turn my sensitive skin red and blotchy. Thank goodness that cosmetics have come a long way since then and we can enjoy this aesthetic without the red blotchy consequences. Now I have one body glitter that I really love which is brilliantly called Unicorn Snot!

#10 Gel Pens - I don’t mean 1 or 2, I mean every color of the rainbow. What other pens would you have people sign your yearbook with? I’m talking feather gel pens, jelly rolls, the works!
